The kickoff in a preseason game between the Browns and the Chiefs was delayed by 1 hour and 10 minutes due to inclement weather in the Cleveland area.
But once it got going, quarterback Deshaun Watson’s preseason debut turned out much better than he did a year ago in Jacksonville.
Watson only played one drive and Cleveland did not score when the club was stuffed at their own 1-yard line. But if you’re a Brown, there are heartening elements to Watson’s play.
The quarterback finished 3 of 3 passing for 12 yards and rushed three times for 20 yards. Watson wasn’t asked to do much, but the process felt fluid with him behind center.
Watson got its only drive with a 6-yard pass to Elijah Moore, who had run out of the backfield. Watson then connected with tight end Jordan Akins on another short pass that resulted in a first down. Twice Watson felt a pocket collapse around him and scrambled for gains of 9 and 8 yards. On first down and goal from the 10th, Watson ran it for 3 yards for a second down and 7.
While Demetrik Felton brought Cleveland to the 1-yard line, the offense stuffed on consecutive plays to come away with no points.
