
Jessica Pegula beat Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals
Jessica Pegula beat fellow American and doubles partner Coco Gauff 6-2 5-7 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open.
Pegula, 29, broke her 19-year-old opponent twice en route to claiming the first set, but Gauff took the lead in the second.
Gauff was unhelpful to nine double faults and Pegula took a decisive break at 5-5 in the third set before serving out for the match.
“It’s always difficult to play your marital partner,” Pegula said.
“It just got down to the wire and who would have competed better.”
Pegula will play Iga Swiatek and Daniel Collins in the semi-finals.
Lyudmila Samsonova defeated world number two Aryna Sabalenka 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-3 in her adjourned third-round match.
Belinda Bencic will play in the quarter-finals after Switzerland came from a set down to secure a 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 6-1 victory over Petra Kvitova in another match that had moved to Friday.
